Diary of a Room Makeover

Edited to add----Oh man! I just realized lighting is an issue too b/c with the girls up on loft beds, a ceiling fan is out of the question! So, I'll add that to the list.

March 6, 2009

We have decided to re-do the girls' rooms. S wants to build them loft beds and put them in the same bedroom.

This stresses me out.

So I have decided that planning is what is needed. And research. And lots of thought. And then I'll be ready for this big change.

Here are a few things I have to decide:

  • what colors the rooms will be
  • what will go in the closets
  • how clothing storage will work
  • how toy storage will work
  • what would be best under the lofts (desks for sure, what else?)
  • how to make each girls' space her own
  • how to make sure the room will grow with them
  • the bedding...oh the bedding. More on that later.
  • when we will make this big change

Whew. I'm tired already. I'm bringing you along on this journey because confused people love company. Isn't that a saying? Well, it should be.

And there will be lots of links in this series (which will be sporadic for sure!) because I know how this works. Later, someone will google search "redoing children's bedrooms" and they are actually looking for real live information people. NOT 25 posts of me whining that I can't decide what to do.

So I'm going to try to be helpful to others WHILE whining. Sound like a plan?

Good. I'm so glad we settled that.

  1. Your list is awesome! Going in with a plan is exactly what I recommend to all of my design clients :) You are off to a great start...thinking about all the right things!! It will turn out perfect for sure! Can't wait to hear more about it!

  3. Confused? I think your plan is PERFECT! You should have seen me tonight in the baby's room (which is now Ron's hunting storage-- with NO organization.) Grace and I decided the crib would go in the middle of the room. Because that's the only spot we can see that's free.

I'm the confused one. I'm gonna copy your list. :)

  4. Yeah, I'm thinking you just need to throw the baby in with Lil Bro. OR....have a camo nursery?

You think I'm kidding, don't you?

  6. Suggestion on making it their own space...
Have a desk & a some shelves under the loft. Then hang a curtain of some sort from the bottom of the bed so that they can have a special spot just for them. We have bunks in one room & my boys LOVE hanging up "curtains" (basically tucking a blanket under the top bunk's mattress) so that they can hide out. Have fun!

  7. check out http://designdazzle.blogspot.com/
that might help you get a start on colors, etc.

Click on girls' rooms on the right-side toolbar. Then spend another four hours looking at everything on the site. It's amazing.

  8. Oooh! Curtains under the lofts? I never thought of that!

And Rachel, thank you. There are TOO MANY CHOICES!!!!

  9. Shoot! I was gonna say curtains under the lofts. Or those bead strands like from the Brady Bunch. Many colors to choose from, and oh-so-cool!

Is the room big enough to make the loft beds doubles? That way it will grow with them for sure, AND you don't have the paranoia one of them will roll out of it before they get used to it.

  10. No way could we fit doubles! And they are used to twin beds now and I told Steve he HAD to make the rails high.

Now I don't have to have the paranoia that the top bunk will fall on the bottom bunk and crush one child.

Not that I've ever laid in bed and thought about that.....

  11. Ha!! Yeah, I've thought of that as well. Not a comforting thing to fall asleep to. And about the lighting issue, underneath you could string Christmas lights...and on top there are those plug in clip on lights. Anyway, excited to see your ideas!

I don't get to talk to a lot of actual grown-ups during the day, so your comments make me really happy! :)
