A Place for the Husband

Dads get a bad rap on TV. Sitcoms as well as commercials depict husband/fathers as really big dolts who can't think past the end of their noses.

And many women are really willing to agree that it is so in their life.

If you don't watch out, you can find yourself rolling your eyes at your own husband although you would certainly be VERY UPSET if he were to roll his eyes at YOU. Attitudes are contagious. I don't want my girls growing up thinking "girls rule, boys drool." It won't play well into their future marriages.

This weekend my husband was sitting on the couch with the laptop, Bibles and commentaries spread all around him as well as the coffee table, studying for the Bible study he leads on Sunday evenings. The fan was blowing every page so he had various heavy objects trying to weight down the books and Bibles he had open. It wasn't a very comfortable study spot.

He said something about, "I sure look forward to the day when I can have a study or a home office."

Hmm. Poor man. The dining room table was full of my sewing stuff. The homeschool table is always covered in stuff. There really isn't any other place in the house for HIM. He leaves to go to work and we take over the whole house.

Instead of lamenting our little house and feeling discontent, I prayed. I prayed for help thinking of a solution. The sewing room, even if it were clean, is really too small for him to work in. He has the garage for his woodshop. We really need the homeschool room. Hmm. Hmm.

Then I got an idea! I was very excited. I told the girls my idea yesterday and they cannot wait for Daddy to come home tonight and see the surprise we have for him. All it took was a little rearranging.

My nightstand goes to the toy room to put Little Bit's dollhouse on. I don't use a nightstand really. Sweetheart's old desk comes out of the garage and into our room. The dresser and small bookshelf switch places.

AND.....TA DA!!!!

A study for Daddy. (S, if you are reading this you better fall over with surprise when you get home!)

Why is it so important? Because we think he is important. He isn't some useless dolt who wanders around our house. He is the head of our family. And he deserves a place to study.

  2. Oh Brenda, I can't wait to hear of S's reaction! (Do tell!) What a fabulous idea!

I totally agree with you about how husbands/dads are viewed in our culture. Women have readily accepted this way of thinking and act accordingly, too. I shutter when I am witness to it!

  3. I was actually just writing a post about appreciating husbands when I stumbled upon this in my google reader. I think I'll put this on my delicious links list. This is a great idea as husbands/dads often are squeezed out of every space by other things going on in the house.

  6. You are a MIND READER. I was getting my son's percussion stuff off the top of the homeschool drawers and had to move a bunch of cell-phone components. It so aggravates me when I finally master the discipline to keep a space reserved for that which belongs there and nothing else, and then I find things there that don't belong - but he needs a place where all his technological debris CAN belong.

  9. He was "very impressed." He said it multiple times and SMILED so, for him, that's equivalent to jumping up and down!

He said I was smart to think of it and impressed we got that all done today. And he used his little area tonight. Worked great!

  10. It is wonderful seeing a wife caring for her husband--it is good to post these things so wives can learn how to bless their husband in simple and not so simple ways. We absolutely need to be about the business of building up our sacred homes by helping our husbands and tending to their needs.

    Many blessings...

  11. Thanks Brenda. We are moving, and my husband had said he wanted a particular room in the house for the computer and his "home office". I initially said no, because I wanted the computer in a common area so that I could always see the screen. But the other day I had some stuff go down, as well as reading this, and I told him he could have that room for the computer and his stuff and he was just so excited.

  12. Yeah, you can always be sure to set it up where the screen can be seen from the doorway.

  13. Love this Brenda! Dads are often neglected because they're out of the house all day, and we are left in charge. What a sweet thing to do for him! So glad he (in his own way) jumped up and down. :0)

  16. As I read this, my husband is in our den watching his Bible Institute Classes (he studies through correspondence w/dvds) and you have me inspired me to think creatively to see how I could improve his area to make it better for him. Thank you!

I don't get to talk to a lot of actual grown-ups during the day, so your comments make me really happy! :)
