Learning As I Go

Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit, I didn't know there were only 8 planets in our solar system these days! Man, where have I been? Did you know Pluto has been kicked out? Yeah, you probably did. I guess this is what they mean by learning alongside your children.

Sweetheart wanted to study space this week (well, actually last week but that was the week Mommy stayed in bed every day). Talk about winging it! If it weren't for the internet what would I do? The space knowledge left over in my head is very sketchy and wouldn't have added much to her concepts, I'm afraid.

I'm also winging it through Thanksgiving. Little Bit has almost no concept of what Thanksgiving is all about (whether you mean the historical first one, or the concept of being thankful) so with her I'm starting from scratch. Sweetheart surely heard the historical part of Thanksgiving during her 3 years in school, but she doesn't really act like it. Yeah, they probably skipped over that like everything else. It was time for worksheet #34, probably.

I just love homeschooling. I suppose if our public school experience had been different, we would have never ended up where we are. I realize that not all schools are evil and horrible. And maybe if her private school was still open, she would still be there. But I do believe that the Lord directs our paths. It's especially obvious when you find yourself in a place you never dreamed of, doing things you never even wanted to do--and loving it!

I wonder what else God has planned for us to do that I now consider myself unqualified for? Hmmm.

  1. I only knew about Pluto because I think we were reviewing that day in Creation at the time.

And Thanksgiving? That's an interesting history. It wasn't even a 4th Thursday in November holiday until Lincoln...and even then it wasn't made official by Congress until 1941!

And in the end, we have a farm-wife to thanks for the idea as we know it now.

  2. Yeah, I knew about Pluto mainly because my hubby is really into that stuff and told me about it. I'm sure one of the great things about homeschooling is the opportunity it gives you to learn some things that weren't known when we were kids because tecnology and science hadn't advanced as much as it has in recent years.

  3. I mean *technology*. I really can spell it!

  4. I didn't know about Pluto so don't feel bad.

I think it is great you are homeschooling. Part of me would love to but I don't really feel God calling me to do that at this time. My older kids are in a wonderful Christian school and my younger two are at a public school where most of the teachers go to our church. I feel very blessed by this.

  5. I know about Pluto; I don't remember where I heard about it, though. N.P. probably told me.

  6. I know they didn't run out and throw away all the solar system books because we recently checked one out that included Pluto. I found a good Thanksgiving site this week. It is through Scholastic, has slideshows and you can click an audio button to listen. It had enough info in one spot to do a lapbook. Mission accomplished (this week)

  7. WOW! Your last sentence is so powerful! We truly do not know what we are limiting the Lord from doing in our lives!

I love the verse Jeremiah 33:3- "Call unto me and I will answer thee and shew thee great and mighty things which thou knowest not."

We just need to get our buttered but out of the way!!!

Many blessings as you progress through school again! I have always held that anyone can teach as long as you can comprehend 10 seconds faster than your child!

I don't get to talk to a lot of actual grown-ups during the day, so your comments make me really happy! :)
